许多业内人士都明白，“主动防御”的实质就是“预先发现、提前拦截”。瑞星在其2008防病毒软件英文版的功能说明中对这种技术给予的描述是：“keeping you one step ahead of unknown future viruses.”[1]（领先未知病毒）。这里的“ahead of”的意思就是提前。再来看看卡巴斯基，其Anti-Virus2009的功能介绍这样描述：“Provides proactive protection from unknown threats”[2]（对未知威胁提供预前保护），这里，“proactive”有 “提前行动”的意思。最后来看赛门铁克，其07年开发的防范未知攻击行为的组件SONAR，被广大媒体着实的炒作了一把，炒作关键词便是“主动防御”。可在其英文介绍中却这样写着：“SONAR is behavioral detection technology that protects against malicious code before standard virus and spyware detection definitions have been created.”[3]（SONAR是一种在标准病毒库建立前提供保护的行为检测技术）压根没有提到“主动”。
那么，广大中国媒体热衷的“主动防御”这个词又是从何而来呢？
首先，可以肯定的是这种技术来自国外，因此它是翻译而来。“主动”对应的常用英文单词有positive/active/initiative，依据这个思路，可以轻易的从维基百科中找到这样的信息：“An active protection system, or APS, protects a tank or other armoured fighting vehicle from incoming fire before it hits the vehicle's armour. There are two general categories: soft kill systems, which use jamming or decoys to confuse a missile's guidance system, and hard kill systems, which attempt to detect and destroy incoming projectiles. In 2008, Time Magazine names the APS #8 in Time's Top 50 Inventions of 2008.”[4]很明显，APS是由美国《时代周刊》于2008年首次提出的。这里的APS是指"Active protection system"，比较准确的翻译是“积极防御系统”，如果翻译成“主动防御”，明显是生搬硬套了。因为，这种系统的特点就是“before”（之前）。
生搬硬套的例子还有一个，我们知道，“星球大战计划”是由里根政府在1983年提出的，它的英文原文是“Strategic Defense Initiative”[5]，可以译作“战略防御计划”。同样美国政府最新的"Comprehensive National Cyber security Initiative,CNCI"[6]也应译作《全面国家网络安全计划》。initiative有主动、率先、提案等意思，可这里如果翻译成“主动”就贻笑大方了。
